From Prototype to Pedagogy: Turning Urban Heat Solutions into STEM Learning
On 28 March 2026, meriSTEM@NIE hosted STEM Hackathon+, themed “Hacking the Heat: Innovating for Sustainability and Learning.”
The “+” in Hackathon+ represents something special — participants didn’t just innovate as students, they also stepped into the role of educators.
Teams first tackled the challenge as students, prototyping architectural solutions to mitigate Singapore’s urban heat island effect, using PocketLab sensors to test their designs.
Then came the “+” moment — participants switched hats to become teachers, designing STEM lesson packages and classroom kits to translate their sustainability solutions into meaningful learning experiences.
The event concluded with an awards ceremony, celebrating both environmental innovation and impactful STEM education.
