  • Playing Host to the Inaugural ISTEM-ED 2024 Conference

    The International STEM Education Conference (ISTEM-ED) 2024 Singapore, organised by meriSTEM@NIE, took place between 26 and 28 June 2024 at the NIE. This inaugural conference brought together over 200 STEM researchers, practitioners and policymakers from 22 economies to share insights on integrated STEM curriculum research, development and implementation.

  • Inspiring a Sustainable Future through STEM Education

    The Empowering STEM Education Professionals Programme (ESEPP) 23/24 kicked off with a call to action: “Applying STEM to Create a Sustainable Tomorrow”. Undergirded by the urgent need for sustainability, this theme echoes Singapore’s Green Plan to nurture environmentally aware, socially responsible eco-stewards and “leading lights” for a greener Singapore.

  • Launch of New Minor in STEM Education in 2024

    Starting 2024, a new Minor in STEM Education will be offered to all students at the NIE and NTU. The programme aims to expand students’ academic portfolio by providing exposure to STEM narratives, incorporating STEM into formal and informal curricula, and fostering a better understanding of STEM careers. It also addresses the increasing global demand for STEM graduates, driven by the growth of digital technologies requiring greater efficiency and precision across industries.

  • New Minor in STEM Education launched

    NIE is offering a new Minor in STEM Education for NIE and NTU students in the BA and BSc programmes to expand their academic portfolio, gain a better understanding of formal and informal curriculum, and develop a better understanding of STEM careers.

  • Making Strides in STEM Education

    The Multi-centric Education, Research and Industry STEM education research centre at the NIE (meriSTEM@NIE) successfully marked two key milestones in October 2023. The first involves the completion of a STEM Co-Enculturation Programme attended by 68 delegates from Indonesia. Separately, a two-day symposium was held to mark the end of the first year of the “Systemic Design of STEM Programme in Singapore”.

  • The NIE-Temasek Foundation STEM Programme in Indonesia Enters Phase 3

    A three-day STEM symposium conducted by the NIE and supported by Temasek Foundation kicked off in Indonesia on 18 May 2023. Attended by 29 teachers and facilitators in addition to 200 online participants, the event began with thought-provoking addresses by the NIE’s Associate Professors Tan Aik Ling, Teo Tang Wee and Arif Hidayat.

  • STEM Learning Journeys under the NIE-Temasek Collaboration Kick Off

    In May 2023, 95 students from seven secondary schools took part in a three-day learning journey organised by meriSTEM@NIE. The learning journey was conducted under the “Systemic Design of STEM Programme in Singapore” jointly initiated by NIE and Temasek Foundation to boost the learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

  • NIE Launches Three-Year STEM Programme for Secondary Schools

  • Enriching STEM Educators Through Knowledge Exchange

    As part of the TF-NIE STEM Programme for Thailand, meriSTEM@NIE led a delegation comprising nine teachers from Singapore and 74 teachers from 10 Centres of Excellence in STEM Education in Thailand to present their projects at the Southeast Asian STEM Education Fair and Exposition held in Bangkok on 10 March 2023.

  • NIE Collaborates with Temasek Foundation to Launch A Three-Year Programme on The Systemic Design of STEM in Singapore

    For the first time, students will have a continual STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning programme from secondary school to the workplace. In a partnership between the NIE NTU, Singapore and the Temasek Foundation, the "Systemic Design of STEM Programme in Singapore" will provide applied and authentic STEM learning opportunities with an ecosystem of partnerships between schools, industries, and the Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs). These partnerships will support connected and longer-term capacity-building of 130 students over the next three years.

  • Empowering STEM Education through “Edible Landscapes”

    “Edible Landscapes” was the theme of the Empowering STEM Education Professionals Programme (ESEPP) 2021/22, with the competition running from 9 November 2021 to 28 March 2022. Teachers from at least two STEM disciplines were invited to form teams of four to participate in the workshop and competition. Their challenge? To design a STEM integrated activity (lesson package) that could support Singapore’s “30 by 30” goal of producing 30 percent of local nutritional needs by 2030.

  • STEM Education from Asia: Trends and Perspectives

  • First STEM Hackathon@NIE For Student Teachers

    An inaugural Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) hackathon at the National Institute of Education (NIE) saw 23 first-year student teachers turning up on 20 March 2021. Organised by the Multi-centric Education, Research and Industry STEM Centre (meriSTEM@NIE) and Sci-napes club, the hackathon aimed to create the space for student teachers to experience group problem-solving in STEM as well as understand how a STEM hackathon is conducted.

  • Talking About STEM At “Education in the City”

    The latest “Education in the City” webinar jointly presented by the Office of Education Research (OER) and National Library Board was held on 13 November 2020. The topic of the webinar was “STEM and Education for the Future”, and discussions were focused on the purposes of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in Singapore, and how this could change or improve people’s lives.

    Congratulations to Associate Professor Teo Tang Wee, Co-Head of the Multi-centric Education, Research and Industry STEM Centre at NIE (meriSTEM@NIE), who recently published a chapter in the UNESCO book entitled “STEM Education for Girls and Women: Breaking Barriers and Exploring Gender Inequality in Asia”. STEM education refers to the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

    Chapter 7 of the UNESCO publication discusses the evaluation findings of an international STEM programme that is designed for girls.

Dr Tan spoke with host Eugene Loh on his journey to becoming a science educator, his passion for STEM education, and various topical issues on scientific literacy and educating for the second-quarter of the 21st Century.

    n this STEM Design workshop, participants will be introduced to the S-T-E-M Quartet model (Tan, Teo, Choy, & Ong, in press) to design meaningful integrated STEM tasks and engage in peer critique of the tasks that are designed. They would also be engaged in a series of ready-made STEM tasks to understand the learning experience that their studentswill undergo.

    Associate Professor Tan Aik Ling from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore proposed that science education can play a certain role in promoting interpersonal communication, civilized culture and economic growth in the latest Singapore science education goals revealed in 2019. In order to improve students' ability to innovate and learn in STEM education, since 2014, Singapore has introduced ALP (Applied Learning Program) for junior high school students, focusing on the themes such as cities and urban landscape, sustainability, health and food sciences, and internet of things.
